The Digital Collection at the University of Connecticut, Homer Babbidge Library's Map and Geographic Information Center (MAGIC), continues to expand!! We have finished the georeferencing and mosaicing process for the 1934 Fairchild aerial photographs. This valuable data set was created from a physical collage of the 1934 photographs laid out over topographic maps. In a partnership betweeen The Connecticut State Library and MAGIC, this dataset was scanned and georeferenced. While it may not be as spatially accurate as modern orthophotography, it is the oldest statewide aerial photography available and should prove even more valuable in its new format. Recognizing that raster data, and especially images, will play an increasing role in our understanding and research of Connecticut's geography, the MAGIC team has been exploring solutions to making very large images files available to the University's user community and our guests.
We are in the process of developing a sophisticated access tool to the University's image data. You can monitor progress if you would like, but in the meantime, here are the first of a growing collection of image datasets of Connecticut.
We are using ER Mapper Image Web Server to serve up these images. ER Mapper uses a wavelet compression which provides the user with just the data they can see in their window extent, thereby speedinging access. The images only work with MS Internet Explorer on these HTML pages. They have been georeferenced
to Connecticut State Plane, NAD 83, map units = feet. ER Mapper provides a plug-in that enables the user to access these files from within a number of programs, including ArcView & ArcGIS. (Instructions for ArcView & ArcGIS users.)
The ability to link to these large files dynamically within a GIS (or other programs) is one of the primary values of the ER Mapper Image Web Server.
**NOTICE**: Effective May 16, 2007, the image web server will be down for maintenance and upgrade. This is likely to take several days as we implement new software and presentation of the image data we serve. We understand the importance of this data to many of you. We will work as expediently as possible to get the image server up and running. Sorry for any inconvenience this causes. |
